HAWTHORN'S chances of winning enough games to make the eight have suffered a massive blow after the club announced that forward Jarryd Roughead would require season-ending knee surgery this week.

Roughead will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee after suffering a lateral meniscus tear in last Saturday’s game against St Kilda and will miss the rest of the season.

This bad news came on top of the confirmation that Trent Croad would not play football at all this year, succumbing to his foot injury.

Croad will also have surgery to fuse bones in his foot after scans revealed signs of wear, weaknesses and loose bodies in some of the joints in his foot.

Croad has been training with the group for the last five weeks but was unable to increase his intensity, leaving surgery as his only option.

The Hawks currently sit in 11th position on the ladder on eight wins and are a game outside the top eight, and will now struggle without the second best goalkicker Roughead. Roughead has kicked 51 goals this year, only seven less than Lance Franklin.
