Round 14 Footy Flashbacks
This Friday night, Hawthorn has the opportunity to extend its club record for most consecutive wins against Carlton...
The 12-point win against the Blues at Docklands in Round 22 last season created a new record of eight, beating the previous one of seven which was established from 1984 to 1986.
The current sequence started with a 24-point win at the MCG in Round 17 2005, followed by a pair of wins the following season.
In the 11 seasons from 2001 onwards, Hawthorn has won 13 of 15 against Carlton, only interrupted by 12 and 6 point defeats in 2004 and 2005.
This week, Hawthorn will also be trying to extend its good record in games after a bye. The Hawks have won their last nine matches after byes, a sequence stretching back to 1991.
In the previous seven years when there were byes (1942-43, 1991-94 and 2011), Hawthorn has had 12 byes and won the following match on 10 occasions.
There were a couple of interesting matters that arose from Hawthorn’s win over Brisbane.
The victory was the club’s 150th win at the MCG, successes which are set against 124 defeats and one draw, meaning Hawthorn has the second best winning percentage at the MCG of any club.
Interestingly, Brisbane’s score of 11.4.70 was the same as they recorded in their first ever game against Hawthorn 25 years earlier. This time their losing margin was 65 points, as opposed to 95 points a quarter of a century ago.
One of Hawthorn’s best wins against Carlton came 30 years ago this week, in Round 14 1982. In a fiery encounter which saw a series of fights, particularly in the latter part of the second quarter, Hawthorn gradually got on top to win by 34 points - 17.14.116 to 12.10.82.
Hawthorn seemed to emerge second best, with John Kennedy being the only player reported, Leigh Matthews being left “very groggy” with blood streaming down his face and Carlton kicking two goals while the brawls were taking place.
Matthews responded magnificently to the rough treatment, producing a 29 disposal and four goal game. Others in the best for the Hawks were David O’Halloran, Rodney Eade, Chris Mew, David Polkinghorne and Alan Goad.
Another memorable Round 14 win against Carlton was a quarter century ago, in Round 14 1987, when Hawthorn beat Carlton by a point at Waverley - 12.8.80 to 12.7.79.
The Hawks trailed by 22 points at half-time, but fought back for a memorable win, with centre half-back Chris Mew and centre half-forward Dermott Brereton receiving the Brownlow votes.
The highest ever attendance for a Hawthorn home and away game against Carlton was 69,014 at the MCG in 2009. The fixture has produced 50,000 plus home and away crowds on just six occasions - three at the MCG, two at Docklands and one at Waverley.
10 years ago, in Round 14 2002, Hawthorn managed a 10-point win against lowly Sydney. Daniel Chick, Adrian Cox and Simon Cox all kicked 2 goals, while the two best for the Hawks were Richie Vandenberg and Brett Johnson.
20 years ago, in Round 14 1992, Hawthorn and West Coast played each other for the first time since the previous season’s grand final. Both had struggled to that stage of the season, with the Hawks going into the Waverley Park clash in seventh and the Eagles sixth.
A crowd of 26,346 saw Hawthorn dominate the opening term kicking 4.6 to 1.0, but from then on struggle to kick goals. In fact, the Hawks finished with just eight for the game - Jason Dunstall kicking six as Hawthorn 8.12.60 lost to West Coast 11.8.74.
40 years ago, in Round 14 1972, Hawthorn thrashed Fitzroy by 53 points at Waverley. Peter Knights followed up his eight goals against North the previous week with another seven, while Leigh Matthews and Mike Porter each chipped in with three.
70 years ago this round Hawthorn played at a new League venue - Yarraville, which was used for Footscray home games in 1942 as the Western Oval was unavailable because of the Second World War. A crowd of 2,500 saw Hawthorn thrashed by 79 points.
Overall, Hawthorn has won 56 and lost 102 of its 158 games against Carlton. After improving its record against Port Adelaide in the past two seasons, Hawthorn’s winning percentage against Carlton, despite its recent wins, is the lowest against any club.
Hawthorn has played 85 matches in Round 14 (having had byes in 1993 and 1994), with a record of 39 wins and 46 losses. Hawthorn won ten consecutive Round 14 matches between 1967 and 1976.
After four consecutive Round 14 losses from 2004 to 2007, the Hawks have now won three of their last four matches in the round, all on Friday nights at the MCG - by 57 points against West Coast in 2008; three points against the Bulldogs in 2010; and by 65 points against Essendon last season.
Hawthorn’s great goal-kickers never managed big bags against Carlton. Peter Hudson, Leigh Matthews and Jason Dunstall all had a top score of seven goals against the Blues - in 1968, 1978 and 1989 respectively.
The best individual tallies for Hawthorn against the Blues are nine by Peter Knights in 1985 and eight by Garry Young in 1959 and Jarryd Roughead in 2009.
The Round 14 individual goal-kicking record for Hawthorn is 12, kicked by Peter Hudson against Footscray at Glenferrie in 1968.
