HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin will be assessed during the week after injuring his left hamstring in his team's 50-point win over Carlton at the MCG on Friday night.

After booting four goals to take his career tally to 498, Franklin left the field early in the last quarter and sat out the rest of the match, leaving him in doubt for next week's clash with Greater Western Sydney.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson was hopeful the problem was not serious.

"I think he's just tightened up in the hamstring, so we'll assess that throughout the course of the week," Clarkson said.

"If he's hurt it, then we'll give him a rest for whatever it needs to get it right, but we'll get it scanned early in the week and see how he goes.

"I don't think it's too serious, whatever it is, but if there's a slight strain there he might miss a week.

"But he's such a resilient big fella, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he played next week."

Clarkson said the round 15 match-up against the 17th-placed Giants wouldn't affect whether Franklin would be selected.

"If Bud is right, he'll play," Clarkson said.

"That'll be the same with all our players. We'll continue to play our boys whilst they're fit.

"Good form is hard to maintain, so we want to make sure that we continue to play them and keep our momentum going."

Clarkson was happy with the Hawks' performance against Carlton, which made it four straight wins and seven from the last eight, and propelled them - temporarily at least - to second on the ladder.

"We were really pleased with the effort of our guys," the 2008 premiership coach said.

"We knew Carlton were going to come out and put in a pretty spirited performance and to come away with a 50-point victory is really pleasing.

"We won a lot of the key indicators we like; we ended up winning the clearances and the inside 50s, and the scoreboard, which is the most important one."

Franklin's haul took his total for the season to 47 goals, leaving him 12 clear of Richmond's Jack Riewoldt in the Coleman Medal race.

Even more ominous for opposition defences were the contributions of fellow tall forwards Jarryd Roughead (three goals) and Jack Gunston (three), giving the trio 10 goals between them.

"If we can share that goalkicking load … all our forwards got a bit of it tonight, which was pleasing," Clarkson said.
