The Box Hill Hawks notched up their first win of the 2011 season after thumping the Coburg Tigers on Easter Sunday, 21.22.148 to 11.6.72.

The opening minutes of the game were scrappy with neither side able to break into open space.

The Hawks began to move in the midst of the term with Will Sierakowski kicking into an open Tom Schneider who booted the first goal of the match.

More Hawks goals followed from Sam Cust and Ryan Schoenmakers, taking the Hawks' tally to four goals for the quarter.

The Hawks came out firing in the second quarter with Jordan Lisle taking a contested mark from Will Sierakowski to snare the first goal of the term. A lull in the match saw a 10-minute period where the Hawks were unable to kick a goal due to inaccuracy in front of the posts.

It wasn’t until late in the second quarter when Luke Breust scored his first of five goals for the day, using pace to break away from the pack and snapped a goal.

Box Hill went into half-time with a four goal lead and came out in the third with three goals on the board in the first 10 minutes.

The third of Box Hill’s early goals went to Jordan Lisle. Taking a great lead-up mark, Lisle went for the set shot, then dummied and took on the man on the mark to kick the goal, with the risk paying off for the Hawks.

Box Hill out-worked Coburg around the ground and reaped the rewards, having 10 scoring shots to four in the third quarter, going into the last break with a commanding 45-point lead.

Coburg had their best quarter in the last kicking four goals strait, but could not match Box Hill kicking 8.7.

Brendan Whitecross, Sam Gibson, Isaac Smith, Jordan Lisle, Jayden Hoegel, Luke Breust and David Jackson all kicked majors in the last quarter to make take the final margin out to 76 points.

As both sides came together for the presentation of the Anzac Day Cup, Coburg captain Nick Carnell summed up the outcome of the match.

“They gave us a lesson in how to win the contested footy today.”

The Hawks travel to Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday to tackle the Werribee Tigers in what will be another must-win game for the Hawks.
