1954 team photo returns
The photo is a unique piece of Club history.
The 1954 team photo has been returned to its spiritual home at Waverley Park.
Currently residing at the coaches’ end of the Stairway of Memories, Club Legend Graham Arthur now includes the piece as part of his Waverley Park Stadium Tours.
The photo is a unique piece of Club history as it is one of two team shots to have illuminated lettering outlining the players’ names.
The image has been a great source in helping the museum identify the names of a number of unknown players in other photos.
The 1954 team photo originally hung inside the gym in the Michael Tuck Stand at Glenferrie Oval until the mid 1960s, when the Club decided to remove all photos.
A number of large portraits and photos were removed as they were considered to be a hazard for the players when training in the gym.
The images were placed in storage and unfortunately most suffered from water damage, including the 1954 photo, and were thrown out.
Fortune was to favour the 1954 photo, as it was rescued by persons unknown and returned to the Club in 2005 - the year the Club was packing up its heritage collection and moving to Waverley Park.
The 1954 photo has been cleaned and will be fully restored at a later date.
The Club is hopeful that other such photos from the gym may surface.
