BOX Hill produced their first win of season 2012 on Saturday night against Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval.

The Hawks 40-point win was their first triumph in Werribee in two decades, but more importantly lifted Damian Carroll’s side to eighth on the VFL table after three rounds.

The victory was set up in a barnstorming first half, as the visitors booted 10 goals to two in what was a heated first half.

Although the major talking point to come out of the fiery contest was the report of Majak Daw for a behind-the-ball incident, Carroll said he could not have been happier with the Hawk’s performance.

“We wanted to make sure we were more disciplined and harder at the footy,” Carroll said.

“Like any side, it’s just vital that you commit to winning the hard footy and I thought we did that really well.”

Hawthorn-listed midfielder Tom Schnieder continued his fantastic start to the season with three goals, including a final-quarter major that shut out any faint hope of a Werribee comeback.

Along with Hawthorn ruckman Luke Lowden and pacy winger Clinton Young, Schnieder was the standout in a win built on contested football.

The Hawks finished with 11 individual goalkickers, with Schnieder and Pratt the multiple goal kickers.

Carroll said the performance of Adam Pattison gave the Hawks a better structure going forward, while Hawthorn-listed pair Derick Wanganeen and Kyle Cheney were named among the best.

“We weren’t good enough in the first game, but tonight we were pretty good,” Carroll said.

“We’ve got a long way to go before we start talking about anything like finishing top four though.”

VFL academy defender Dave Mirra’s shut-down role on dangerous Werribee forward Ben Warren earned praise from Carroll, with the North Melbourne-listed player held goalless for the first time this year.
