Hawk laughs off criticism
Hawk Shaun Burgoyne has dismissed questions raised about his value to the team
SHAUN Burgoyne has laughed off media criticism of his form since crossing to Hawthorn, saying he only cares about what his coaches and teammates think.
The former Port Adelaide star, who crossed to the Hawks ahead of the 2010 season, was the subject of an Age article questioning his value late last week.
Burgoyne said he was satisfied he was doing his job for his team.
"I've had to play forward, back and midfield at times, and I'll just play the role that I'm assigned to each week; that's all you can do," Burgoyne said on Monday.
"The only things you listen to are your coaches and your teammates.
"The external stuff doesn't really affect the way we go about things."
Burgoyne said the Hawks had much to improve on from their 66-point win over bottom-placed Melbourne on Friday night.
"We've got a lot of things to work on," he said.
"Our goalkicking wasn't good enough, so we'll probably work on that this week.
"But there were some positives as well: winning contested footy, [and] when a team wants to play one-on-one, knowing we can do that."
Fellow Hawk Michael Osborne injured his knee in the victory, with the club still seeking advice on whether he'll need a reconstruction.
Burgoyne said his teammate was remaining upbeat.
"'Ossie' is a funny guy," he said.
"It takes a bit to get him down.
"He's around the club, walking around, doing his rehab. The boys are trying to keep his spirits up."
