Bring on the Cats
After defeating Collingwood, Josh Gibson says Hawthorn is eager to test itself against the AFL's "measuring stick"
DEFENDER Josh Gibson says Hawthorn is eager to test itself against the AFL's "measuring stick" when it takes on reigning premier Geelong on Easter Monday.
Far from basking in the satisfaction of a 22-point win over 2011 grand finalist Collingwood in round one, Gibson says the Hawks have immediately turned their attention to next week.
"It was a positive to have a win against Collingwood, we haven't done that in the past, so that was pleasing, but we can't rest with that," Gibson said on Monday.
"We've got Geelong now, who have been in fantastic form and they're the measuring stick.
"So we've got to go out there and play our way again, and hopefully get another win."
Hawthorn hasn't beaten the Cats since the 2008 Grand Final, a run of seven straight losses.
But Gibson said the Hawks' determination to win was less about the recent history between the teams and more about beating the competition's benchmark.
Fremantle's Hayden Ballantyne got under Geelong's skin at Subiaco on Saturday night, leading to several undisciplined acts from Cats players, contributing to the home team's narrow victory.
But Gibson said his team wouldn't try to copy the Ballantyne-style niggle.
"I didn't get to watch the game, but obviously I've read a little bit about what happened," the 28-year-old said.
"That's footy, I suppose - there's niggles every week.
"So we'll just have a chat about that and see what happens.
"But I think we'll just be focussing on playing the way we play, and hopefully if we get our structures right then things will look after themselves."
