Hawks' 'Mr Fix-it'

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson has described Shaun Burgoyne as the Hawks' 'Mr Fix-it' - able to play anywhere his team needs him.
Burgoyne has spent much of his time in brown and gold across half-back, but with Jordan Lewis out suspended has returned to his traditional midfield role over the past fortnight.
The strong-bodied veteran played a starring role from the middle of the ground in Hawthorn's 65-point win over the Brisbane Lions on Sunday, collecting 24 disposals, including five clearances, and laying seven tackles.
He also slipped forward to boot two goals.
Burgoyne said he had enjoyed the opportunity to play in the midfield, where he earned his star status with original club Port Adelaide, but was happy to do whatever was needed to help the Hawks win.
"I did enjoy playing on-ball predominantly, but the last couple of years I've really enjoyed being thrown around," he said after his best-on-ground performance.
"Being able to go back and be a link player, and go forward and try to kick a goal; I'm enjoying the unpredictability of not knowing where I'm going to play each week.
"It keeps you on edge."
Burgoyne's flexibility means he is required to attend meetings for the Hawks' defence, midfield and forward line.
It also provides regular tests in concentration on-field.
"You have to quickly change your thought process from a mid to a defender, and from a defender to a forward," the 29-year-old said.
Clarkson praised Burgoyne's ability to beat his opponent no matter where he played.
"He's a 'Mr Fix-it' for us," Clarkson said.
"With Jordan Lewis being out of the side suspended we've needed to use Shaun more in the midfield the last couple of weeks.
"Prior to that he'd played a lot of his footy in the back-end for us and been a really solid contributor down there.
"Whether he's in the midfield, forward or back he's just outstanding in one-on-one contests.
"He's very, very strong, and rarely beaten.
"He's a very important member of our side because of his flexibility to play in all areas of the ground.
"Probably ruck is the only position we don't use him in."
