Round 11 Footy Flashbacks
Hawthorn’s best-ever win over Port Adelaide was in the...
The previous occurrence, was Jason Dunstall’s 10 in the famous ‘merger match’ of Round 22 1996.
In the 29 seasons from 1968 to 1996 there were 34 instances of Hawthorn players kicking 10 or more goals, whereas in the other 59 seasons (1925-67, 1997-present) only Alec Albiston (1940), Wally Culpitt (1944) and Franklin have reached 10 goals in a game.
Coincidentally, last round’s Football Record had a story about the first of the run of 34 - Peter Hudson’s first 10 goal bag in Round 1 1968, the only instance of a Hawthorn player kicking 10 or more in a losing team.
Franklin became just the 22nd individual in 116 years of VFL-AFL history to kick 13 or more goals in a game. Hawthorn is just the third club to have three players achieve the feat, joining Collingwood and South Melbourne/Sydney.
Previous Hawks to kick 13 goals or more goals were Peter Hudson who did it three times, kicking 16 (1969), 13 (1969) and 13 (1970), while Jason Dunstall did it twice with 17 (1992) and 14 (1996). Hawthorn now has six of the 37 VFL-AFL instances of a player kicking 13 goals or more in a game, second only to Collingwood’s seven.
Franklin easily accounted for the previous Hawthorn record against North which was 10 goals kicked by Alec Albiston in 1940 and Dunstall in 1988.
Franklin’s 13 goals also saw him move into fifth place on the Hawthorn all time list as he has progressed to 485 career goals, going past John Peck (475) in the second quarter. The only players now ahead of Franklin are Jason Dunstall (1254), Leigh Matthews (915), Peter Hudson (727) and Michael Moncrieff (629).
The 115 point margin was a new record against North Melbourne, surpassing the previous highest of 95 points, recorded in 1971 and 1988.
Overall, the victory was Hawthorn’s 22nd by 100 points plus, which compares well with only 19 losses by more than 100 points. Remarkably, Hawthorn suffered 13 such defeats before recording an inaugural 100 plus point win against Footscray in 1970 (which incidentally was also by 115 points). This means that, since the start of the 1970s, the Hawks have recorded 22 such wins and suffered only six such defeats.
This coming Sunday, Hawthorn has the chance to complete a sequence of three wins against Port Adelaide for the first time. Last season’s two wins equalled the achievement of the 2000 season, but now there is the opportunity to improve on a record which has seen the Hawks win just nine of 24 games versus the Power.
Hawthorn has won just three of eleven ‘away’ games against Port Adelaide in 2000, 2007 and 2011. The Hawks also beat Port in an away Final in 2001. This is the fourth consecutive season the Hawks have played away to Port Adelaide at Football Park, losing by 18 points (2009) and 8 points (2010), while last season in Round 7 after trailing by 8 points at quarter time and scores being level at half-time, the Hawks drew away to win by 32 points.
Hawthorn’s best-ever win over Port Adelaide was in the 2001 Semi Final at Football Park. In a memorable final quarter, the Hawks fought back from 17 points down to win by 3 points. John Barker and Daniel Harford kicked crucial late goals, while Mark Graham starred.
Overall, Round 11 is one of Hawthorn’s worst rounds, with the club winning just 34 of the 87 games it has played in the round (51 defeats and two draws). In the 10 seasons from 1998 to 2007, the Hawks recorded just one win (versus Adelaide in 2003) and one draw (versus the Bulldogs in 1999) in the round, but things appear to be trending upwards with wins in the past four seasons.
10 years ago, in Round 11 2002, Hawthorn also headed to Football Park, but on this occasion its opponent was the Crows. The Hawks led at half-time, but the fact the score was 5.3 to 3.12 perhaps indicated that once the Crows began kicking accurately the Hawks would be in trouble. And so it proved, with Adelaide winning 14.18.102 to 8.10.58. Kris Barlow was the Hawks only multiple goal-kicker with three, while Shane Crawford had 27 disposals.
Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the game was that Campbell Brown made his debut.
30 years ago, in Round 11 1982, Hawthorn thrashed Melbourne by 79 points at Princes Park - 26.22.178 to 14.15.99. The goals were shared around with John Kennedy and Leigh Matthews both kicking four, while Michael Byrne, Richard Loveridge, Michael Tuck and terry Wallace all kicked three.
60 years ago, in Round 11 1952, Hawthorn achieved the unusual feat of keeping its opponent scoreless in a quarter but still failed to win the match.
Playing Carlton again just three weeks after their ‘Propaganda Round’ meeting in Euroa the Hawks held the Blues scoreless in the second quarter, while adding 3.7 themselves.
Unfortunately, this still meant Hawthorn trailed by four points at half-time and in the second half Carlton cruised away to a 37 point win. Bill Collins kicked two goals for Hawthorn.
80 years ago, in Round 11 1932, bottom team Hawthorn (with a 1-9 record) scored an upset 21 point Glenferrie Oval win over sixth placed Footscray (5-5). Bert Hyde kicked three goals and ‘Tich’ Utting two
