With Jonny Patton likely to miss Hawthorn’s Round 15 clash against Adelaide, there’s at least one senior spot available to the young Hawks waiting in the wings.
With no practice match this week, the players will be relying solely on training efforts and previous scratch match form to state their selection cases.
Mitch Lewis seems the obvious choice if the Hawks opt for a like-for-like replacement for Patton, with the tall forward looking impressive in his previous few scratch match performances.
Having struggled with injury and form in his AFL appearances earlier this year, Lewis says he has focused on building back his confidence - an effort that appears to be paying dividends.
Jarman Impey is also likely to return, having overcome foot soreness that kept him out of Round 14.
With finals now off the cards for season 2020, Coach Alastair Clarkson says the Hawks will experiment with their method and personnel in the remaining weeks, so the selection panel may opt for additional unforced changes to give others an opportunity.
Untried youngster Finn Maginness appears to be the people’s choice, with fans across social media calling for the first-year Hawk’s selection for several weeks. He appears to be edging closer, with GM-Football Graham Wright last week hinting fans could see Maginness in action in the next couple of weeks.
Jackson Ross is another who could come into consideration. The forward has added another string to his bow in recent weeks, performing admirably in the backline as he looks to add more versatility to his game.
Dylan Moore has narrowly missed out on selection, named as an emergency for several games this year. After a series of strong performances playing through the midfield and half forward in the scratch matches, he’ll be hoping for another senior opportunity before year’s end.
Hawthorn’s Round 15 team will be revealed at 6.20pm on Monday night, ahead of Tuesday’s clash with the Crows.
