Just as the 2020 AFL Trade period draws to a close, Hawthorn has secured its second recruit, with Tom Phillips set to don the brown and gold in 2021.
The 24-year-old joins the Hawks following a trade that saw pick 65 sent to the Magpies’ nest.
Phillips has spent the last five seasons with Collingwood since being selected with Pick 58 in the 2015 National Draft.
A talented wingman, Phillips has displayed impressive endurance, pace and an ability to accumulate possessions across his 89 senior appearances.
Arguably his best season came in 2018, as he averaged 25.5 disposals and six marks on his way to a grand final berth, selection in the 22under22 side and a sixth-place finish in Collingwood’s best and fairest.
GM-Football Graham Wright says he is pleased to have secured Phillips’ services with a two-year deal.
“We’re thrilled to have negotiated a trade with Collingwood that brings Tom to Waverley.
“He is a talented young player who can bolster our outside mid stocks, and at 24 years of age, he has plenty of quality football left ahead of him.
“We’re excited to watch him develop further in the brown and gold.”
Wright also explained that the club was successful in holding its strong draft position while building on some key areas of the list.
“We’ve had a clear plan during this first phase of the trade period which primarily revolved around maintaining and enhancing our draft selection.
“We’re really pleased to have been able to do that up to this point while also bringing in two established, quality AFL players in Tom and Kyle.”
