Ben McEvoy says becoming a captain of an AFL club was never something he aspired to achieve but the pride in being named Hawthorn skipper is immense.
Upon his official appointment on Friday, McEvoy was rather blunt in his response to whether the top leadership position had ever been a goal for him.
"No, not ever to be honest, it's not something that I ever really thought of," McEvoy said.
"If there is one thing I'd like to think people say about how I play my footy it's that I'm always team first.
"So, I've never aspired to be here but I'm incredibly privileged at the same time."
Introducing your new club captain, Ben McEvoy!
Entering his eighth season in the brown and gold, the former Saint, with family watching on, said he was overjoyed by the honour.
"It's still feeling a little bit surreal to be honest, it's an enormous privilege to find myself in this position.
"We had a really transparent process around our values and what we stand for and who we trust to drive those values.
"Once the votes came through, we had a discussion about where it sat, went through the channels and then it all got made official last night."
A man who prefers to lead through his body of on-field work, McEvoy said he would do little adjusting to the "version of him that was elected by his teammates".
"I certainly think any good leader needs to start by leading with their actions and I think that's how I've found myself here.
"I endeavour to set the right example and do what I can.
"But also know when to speak up and play that role when I need to as well."
