With the news of Tom Scully's retirement on Tuesday, Hawthorn will have a vacant list spot ahead of the 2021 season.

So, what does that mean? Can the Hawks fill that spot? And, if so, how and when?

It's a unique list management position that the club finds itself in, but we have all the answers here for you.

Scully calls time on career

The Hawks have the opportunity to invite one or more players to train with the squad in pursuit of that list spot.

The club will then have three options.

The first of these is to make a selection via the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period, or the SSP.

The SSP is open until March 9, with eligible clubs able to add to their list from any time between now and then.

The second option would be to opt not to make any selections through the SSP, with the view to instead select a player in the mid-season rookie draft.

After being put on hold in 2020 due to COVID-19, the mid-season rookie draft will return this year on June 2.

A selection in the SSP or the mid-season rookie draft would see the hypothetical player be rookie-listed.

The third option would be for the Hawks to opt not to fill the vacated position.

It is important to note that the club currently will just have one vacant position on its 2021 list.
