The Hawks may be in for a double boost as they look to make a return to the winners’ list against Sydney on Friday night.

Having not been sighted since fracturing his ankle in the side’s loss to Richmond in Round 2, Will Day is expected to make his long-awaited return this weekend.

Among the Hawks best performers in the side’s season opening win over Essendon, the 20-year-old’s characteristic composure and skill level would be a valuable addition if the match committee is to opt to bring the youngster straight back into the senior side.

Explosive midfielder Jaeger O’Meara is the second part of this potential boost.

O’Meara was concussed in the latter stages of Hawthorn’s Round 10 loss to Carlton but, having spent the past two weeks resting and rehabilitating, he appears on the cusp of proving his fitness.

Physical Performance Manager Luke Boyd had this to say of the side’s leading clearance generator.

“Jaeger’s concussion symptoms have settled down quite well,” Boyd said.

“He was able to start some skills-based work since then and trained well today.

“We just need to make sure he recovers and pulls up well from that training session, but at this stage we think he’s a chance to play this week.”

And then there’s the smokey bets.

Could Alastair Clarkson and his crew look to one or both of the club’s newest pair, mid-season draftees Jai Newcombe and Jackson Callow?

Both Newcombe, a tough midfielder, and Callow, a bullocking key forward, have been stand-outs for their respective state-league sides prior to being brought onto the AFL list.

Could that form be deemed enough for a prospective AFL debutant?

The team to take on Sydney on Friday night will be announced on Thursday at 6.20pm AEST.
