Two young Hawks are closing in on a superstar teammate as the club's goal kicking count looks to become another tight tussle in 2021.

While Luke Breust appears likely to take out this year's crown as Hawthorn's leading goal kicker - with 29 goals to his name so far this season - youngsters Dylan Moore and Jacob Koschitzke will make him earn it - sitting on 22 and 21 majors respectively.

Koschitzke, who made his debut in the senior side this season, has cemented himself as a key target up forward, having had as many shots as Breust on goal, both tallying 39 scoring shots.

If Breust takes out this year’s crown, it will make it the third out of the last four seasons that he has kicked the most goals for the brown and gold.

The 30-year-old booted 54 majors to take out the award in 2018, and then backed it up the following year with 34 goals, before Jack Gunston reclaimed the top spot in 2020 with 31 goals.

Despite missing four games due to a broken jaw last year, Breust performed strongly enough to finish third in the club’s goal kicking tally behind Gunston and Chad Wingard. 

The three-time premiership star also booted the 400th goal of his career in 2020, becoming just the ninth Hawk to reach the milestone.

Breust's biggest goal haul of the 2021 season came last round in his side's draw against Melbourne when he kicked three.

But with Moore and Koschitzke coming off the back of impressive seasons up forward, they seem likely to be in contention for this year’s prize.

Moore, who is in his third season at Hawthorn, has provided his side with a key target in the forward line throughout most of this year, having played 17 games in 2021.

The 21-year-old has kicked 21 goals, averaging 1.3 goals per game this season.

His top performance this year was against GWS in Round 15 where he booted four majors.

It's an impressive turn around considering that ahead of Round 16 last year, Moore hadn't added to his tally of seven senior games in 2019.

Meanwhile Koschitzke, also 21, has continued to hone his craft as a key position player in his third year in the AFL system and his first in the senior side.

After beginning his career as a defender, Kosi shifted to the forward line in late 2020 and has since forged a breakout year in 2021, averaging 1.3 goals per game.

His blistering five-goal performance in Round 6 against Adelaide saw him receive a Rising Star nomination.
