What is an open training session?
'Open training' is a training session open to the public. The club shares details for these sessions so that members and fans can watch their team train.
In contrast, 'closed training' is a session that is not open to spectators to keep the training activity private from opposition teams.
What is 'Burra's Yama' training at Hawthorn?
Hawthorn renamed their 'Captain's Run' training session to 'Burra's Yama' in early 2022 in consultation with Hawks player and Yorta Yorta man Jarman Impey. The new name, along with other naming changes across the club, is done in support of education and preservation of Indigenous language.
'Burra's Yama' translates to 'Bosses Run' in Yorta Yorta language, as shared by Impey when explaining the name's origins on HawksTV.
AFL clubs' traditionally have a 'Captain's Run' training session the day before a match with training activity led by the team captain as opposed to coaches.
A 'main session,' as it is sometimes termed, is held mid-week encompassing general conditioning and skills drills.
Where do Hawthorn players train in Melbourne?
Hawthorn AFL players train at club headquarters, Bunjil Bagora, Waverley Park, with regular open training sessions held during the home-and-away season.
Where do the players train when traveling interstate?
Burra's Yama training sessions are often held interstate when the team plays an interstate match. Details for these open training sessions are shared via email with Hawthorn members in the state and posted here on hawthornfc.com.au.
Which training sessions have more happening on the day?
Special event open training sessions such as Easter Open Training, Christmas Open Training, and select open training sessions during school holidays and finals provide more than watching the team train.
These events feature family-friendly activities, meet-and-greet opportunities, giveaways, and more ways to connect with the club.
How do I find out about upcoming open training sessions?
