Hawks youngster Changkuoth Jiath has earned a spot in the 2021 AFL Players’ Association 22Under22 team.

The promising defender showed some impressive signs throughout the year, playing every game before a season-ending knee injury in Round 17.

Prior to 2021, Jiath had played just seven AFL matches, but following some strong form this year he now has formed a key part in Hawthorn's defensive stocks.

Jiath had an outstanding start to 2021, having received coaches' votes and back-to-back MVP plaudits in the first few of his games.

The 21-year-old, who first arrived at Hawthorn in 2017 as a Category B rookie, has excited Hawks fans with his dashing play from defence, strong overhead marking and willingness to take the game on. 

He averaged 20.3 disposals per game this year and produced a career-best performance in Round 13 against Sydney with 28 touches and 553 metres gained.

The 22Under22 is a fan-voted concept that recognises the league’s best young players under the age of 22.

To be eligible for selection, players had to be aged 22 or younger for the entire AFL season, including finals, and played a minimum of 12 games throughout the 2021 season.

Fellow brown and gold young guns Dylan Moore and James Worpel were also named in the initial 40-man squad, but did not make the final team which was announced on Thursday.
