Hawthorn's youngsters displayed a promising performance in a 25-point loss against Richmond in the AAMI Community Series.

While Richmond won Saturday's 'Healing for Hillcrest' tribute match, it was a Hawks draftee who caught the eye with his superb performance.

Taken with pick No.7 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, Josh Ward was a standout for the Hawks with 29 disposals, four marks and six clearances in a mature showing through the middle.

Jai Newcombe and Conor Nash were also impressive finishing with 23 and 24 disposals respectively.

But despite their efforts, the Tigers were too strong, running out 14.10 (94) to 9.15 (69) winners in the 'Healing for Hillcrest' tribute match at Devonport Oval.

Richmond made a blistering start to the game, booting seven goals in the opening term to lead by 33 points at the first change.

With Noah Balta and Jack Riewoldt (three goals each) dominating in attack, the Tigers extended that margin to 46 points at three-quarter time.

The Hawks managed to fight back, scoring four goals to Richmond's one in the last quarter, but the Tigers held strong.

Post-match Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell said he was pleased with the development and growth of the club’s younger players as the team edges closer to its 2022 season opener.

“We made some adjustments, we’re continuing to evolve – we saw more to like in our game this week,” Mitchell said.

“Some of our younger players got a bit more exposure today – they stepped up and we had some strong performances from some of those younger fellas.

“We’re really trying to invest time in the development of the younger players. They have a great ability to learn and absorb information, they’re so diligent.”

The match acted as a fundraiser to support the Devonport community, following the tragedy that occurred at Hillcrest Primary School last year.
