Despite an impressive comeback, Hawthorn has fallen to Carlton in a one-point thriller at the MCG.

The Blues kicked seven goals in a row in the opening term to enter the first change 34 points up, but the Hawks got to work and chipped away at the deficit in the thrilling 11.8 (74) to 11.7 (43) contest.

The Hawks got the first goal of the game, but the Blues bit back and then kept biting, booting seven goals straight.

Hawthorn managed to steady the ship in the second, with Luke Breust and Dylan Moore making the most of the Hawks’ forward 50 entries.

The Hawks kept clawing back the margin in the third term, before launching an all-out assault on the goalposts and booting five goals in a row to snatch the lead back midway through the final quarter.

In an impressive turnaround, Hawthorn kept Carlton to just two goals in the second half while the Hawks kicked seven.

But the brown and gold fold couldn't hold off the Blues long enough, with Carlton taking home a thrilling one-point win.

Changkuoth Jiath was a standout performer finishing with 27 disposals, as was James Sicily who recorded 24 touches.

Dylan Moore, Jack Gunston and Luke Breust were all influential on the scoreboard finishing with two goals each.

The loss marks the Hawks first for the season.

Hawthorn will now turn its attention to St Kilda next week when they face them back at the 'G.
