Hawthorn star Jaeger O'Meara says he is proud to be able to lead his side out as captain Ben McEvoy recovers from his injury.

O'Meara will again captain the Hawks this weekend in McEvoy's absence as the skipper spends some time on the sidelines due to a small fracture in his neck.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, O'Meara said the captaincy opportunity is something he will treasure. 

"I'm a kid from a small town in Dongara Western Australia, so to be able to say that I've captained a couple of games at the Hawthorn Football Club is something I'll look back on and be really proud of," O'Meara said.

O'Meara said the captaincy role was likely to be shared among the playing group, with McEvoy expected to return in the back half of the year.

"In terms of flattening our leadership curve, you'll probably see someone else standing in this position before Ben's back," O'Meara said.

"We want to give some other guys some opportunities - I wouldn't be surprised if there's another leader that jumps up in the next few weeks and takes the captaincy role."
