Box Hill took home their first win of the season after defeating the Sandringham Zebras in a strong display at the MCG on Sunday.
In what was a curtain raiser for Hawthorn's senior side, the Round 3 clash saw four Box Hill players experience their first ever outings at the venue.
Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten has given his review of each of the eight listed Hawks that competed in the hit-out on the weekend.
Tom Phillips (28 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal)
“I thought Tom was the best player on the ground. His effort and intensity was at a really high level throughout the whole game. And his running was impressive, he looked really strong running across the MCG. He used his foot skills really well, he finished with 28 touches and kicked a really nice goal for us as well."
Liam Shiels (28 disposals, 2 inside 50s, 8 tackles)
“Liam played his first game for Box Hill, and like the true professional he is, he came back and was a great leader for us on the day and set the example as an inside midfielder. He again had a great influence on the game with 28 touches. The way he came back and handled himself was very classy."
Josh Morris (14 disposals, 7 marks)
“Tank continued his strong form in the VFL as a defender, he was able to take some really nice intercept marks, coming off his man was a real highlight for him during the day."
Connor Downie (15 disposals)
“Connor played his first game for the year after being injured during the pre-season. Admittedly he started a little bit scratchy just with the pace and physicality of the game having been out for so long. But he was able to turn that around pretty quickly and get involved and use his strong penetrating legs."
Ned Long (15 disposals, 11 tackles, 4 clearances)
“Ned plays with high energy and strong attack on the opposition and the ball which again was highlighted by his 11 tackles. He has the tenacity to go after the opposition, roll up the sleeves and get his hands dirty which is a real highlight of his game at the moment. We still want Ned to find a bit more of the footy for us, especially around stoppages using his big frame. He had a ‘run with role’ during the game and experienced some really great education and learnings from that aspect."
Jackson Callow (10 disposals, 1 goal)
“Callow played forward for the whole game. We’d been using him as a ruck previously, but this week we wanted to give him a full game up forward. He had more energy and speed, which was highlighted by some of his efforts putting pressure on the opposition. I’ve asked him to have a bit faster feet and react really fast in the forward line, and he was able to do that. He is still a young key forward developing his leading patterns and habits, but Sunday's game was another step in the right direction.”
Jai Serong (11 disposals, 4 tackles, 4 marks)
"Jai is again impressing us with his athleticism. He can play several positions, high off the ground as forward or deep as a forward. We really like him up the ground using his running ability to be outlet kicks for us from defence. He’s still learning his craft nicely."
Sam Butler (9 disposals, 1 goal, 4 tackles)
“Buts played his second game this week, and he built on this and performed better than last week. He’s a young player that we want to get going. Every time he’s around the footy something good seems to happen. He’s just got to keep learning to get around the footy more and to use his assets where he can."
