Coach Sam Mitchell says despite an impressive win against Geelong last week, he would not be looking to replicate the same approach when Hawthorn takes on Sydney this Monday.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Mitchell said he was looking to make progress and improve every week.
“I’m not really much one for replication – when you’re looking backwards and trying to do what you did last week,” Mitchell said.
“We saw some good things in the game last week, but I mentioned to the players ‘if you’re feeling good about the Easter Monday win – we kicked three goals before they had a possession, so basically, we lost the rest of the game.’
“That was the way that I put our feet back on the ground. Although we won the game and it was a great win against a quality side, if you go from the three-minute mark to the rest of the game they actually outscored us.”
Despite a 3-2 record to the start of the season, Mitchell said he was not looking too far ahead.
“We haven’t said ‘we’re going to try to win this many games’ or ‘we’re going to play this way’,” he said.
“We’re on a longer journey, we recognise we’re in the competition to win premierships.
“Are we a premiership team contender right this minute? We don’t feel like we are yet. But we feel like we know the journey that that’s going to be and how to make progress in that direction.
Speaking on the upcoming clash, Mitchell said he has had some discussions with the playing group in the lead up about the significance of ANZAC Day.
“We’ve got a couple of staff who have been part of the war time and defence force,” Mitchell said.
“We’ve been working with those and getting some stories and understanding, we try to help our players with education.
“Having a quiet moment to think about what’s happened in the past that gives us the lifestyle now has been pretty significant for us.”
