This round marks the 10th anniversary of one of the most memorable individual performances in modern Hawthorn history.
10 years ago, in Round 10 2012, Lance Franklin kicked 13 goals against North Melbourne in Launceston.
The Hawks went into this game with a below expectations 5-4 record and coming off a shock loss to Richmond the previous week, in which Franklin kicked just one goal. They began slowly in this one too, before kicking three quick goals to take a seven-point quarter time lead, including Franklin’s first for the game at the 31-minute mark.
Franklin then proceeded to kick five goals in the second quarter, four in the third and three in the last, the final two coming in the final moments of the game to bring up the famous ‘13’.
Hawthorn won by 115 points – 27.12.174 to 9.5.59. Franklin obviously got the three Brownlow votes, with the others going to current members of the Hawthorn coaching panel as Sam Mitchell got the two votes and David Hale one.
To put Franklin’s performance into historical perspective, it remains the highest individual AFL goals tally since Scott Cummings kicked 14 for West Coast in the 2000 season. It is also the only instance of a Hawthorn player kicking 10 or more goals in a game since Jason Dunstall kicked 10 in the ‘merger match’ against Melbourne in Round 22 1996.
In total, there have been 37 instances of a Hawthorn player kicking 10 or more goals in a game. Remarkably, 34 of the 37 occurred in a 29-season period from 1968 to 1996, with just two in the 43 seasons from 1925 to 1967, and only Franklin’s effort in the last 26 seasons.
Franklin is one of four Hawthorn players to kick 10 or more goals once (the others being Alec Albiston, Wally Culpitt and Dermott Brereton). Leigh Matthews kicked 10 or more goals twice; Michael Moncrieff did so three times; Peter Hudson on 12 occasions; and Jason Dunstall heads the list with 16.
Hawthorn’s score of 14.10.94 against Richmond last Saturday was its highest losing score since recording 14.14.98 in a 10-point loss to GWS in Round 6 2015.
Hawthorn has won its last two matches against Brisbane Lions. The Hawks won by 28 points at the MCG in Round 1 2020, in the club’s match played without a crowd due to the pandemic. Then last season, the Hawks backed up the previous season’s result with a 12-point victory at University of Tasmania Stadium in Round 20.
A common factor in both games was outstanding performances by Chad Wingard, gaining three Brownlow votes in the 2020 encounter and two in last season’s match.
This weekend’s game at University of Tasmania Stadium will continue its role as the predominant venue for recent games between Hawthorn and Brisbane Lions.
This will make it 12 of the last 17 clashes between the clubs at the venue, with only three at the Gabba and just two matches (in 2012 and 2020) at the MCG. The Hawks have won eight and lost three of the 11 Launceston games played to date.
Overall, Hawthorn and Brisbane have played 52 times, with the Hawks winning 32 and losing 20. Hawthorn won eight consecutive games against the Lions from 2010 to 2017, but then lost four games in 2018-19, before winning the most recent two games in 2020 and 2021.
Sam Butler has become just the second Hawthorn player which the club has taken with pick 23 in the National Draft. The other was Shannon Gibson who was selected in the 1994 National Draft.
Gibson played 25 games for the Hawks from 1995 to 1997, kicking 18 goals. He made important contributions to two narrow wins at Kardinia Park, kicking two goals on debut there in 1995 and four goals in another upset triumph in 1997. Gibson played four games for Collingwood in 1998, before joining a distinguished list of former Hawks who have captained Preston in the VFA-VFL.
Tom Mitchell’s absence last Saturday ended a sequence of 47 consecutive games, one ahead of the 46 consecutive games he played in 2017-18. Injury ruled him out for the entire 2019 season, but he had played every game since his return in Round 1 2020. The longest current sequence of consecutive games is now held by Sam Frost with 34.
Hawthorn has a positive Round 10 record with 49 wins and 47 defeats.
30 years ago, in Round 10 1992, Hawthorn scored a regulation 61-point win over the lowly Swans in Sydney, with Jason Dunstall kicking seven goals and Tony Hall four, while Darren Jarman had 31 disposals and Gary Ayres 30.
60 years ago, in Round 10 1962, Hawthorn recorded its fourth win for the season defeating South Melbourne at the Lake Oval 12.14.86 to 7.8.50. Ian Mort kicked three goals, while Morton Browne and Kevin Connell each booted two. The team included 14 of the previous year’s Premiership team. The win lifted the Hawks to eighth on the ladder, but they were still three games plus a considerable amount of percentage behind fourth-placed Footscray.
Jason Dunstall holds the club individual goal-kicking record against Brisbane, with 11 goals in the first ever match between the two clubs at Carrara in 1987.
Unsurprisingly, as described above, Lance Franklin holds the Hawthorn individual goalkicking record for Round 10 with his 13 goals against North Melbourne in 2012 surpassing the previous round record of nine, held jointly by Peter Knights (1985), Paul Hudson (1991) and Jason Dunstall (1998), against Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon respectively.
