Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell says he is proud of his young side’s maturity following a five-point victory against an in-form Brisbane on Sunday.

The Hawks walked away as winners of the thrilling clash at UTAS Stadium, handing the Lions just their second loss of the season.

Speaking to the media following the game, Mitchell said he thought his group produced a solid four-quarter effort.

“I thought the boys played well,” Mitchell said.

“I was really pleased with the maturity of the group that they were able to play all the way to the end.

“There was a lot of different things happening in the game and I thought the boys handled it really well and played with a high level of effort and intent.”

In what was a hugely entertaining game from the opening bounce, there was never more than six points separating the sides at the three breaks.

Mitchell said he was also pleased with his group's ability to stop the Lions’ run several times throughout the afternoon.

“What we haven’t been able to do is stop momentum shifts (this season),” he said.

“But I thought today they (Brisbane) had a run on for certain periods of the game, but we were able to get the momentum back in our favour.”
