Hawthorn has announced the signing of Peter Burge as the club’s new High Performance Manager for the 2023 season.

Burge’s appointment is somewhat of a homecoming, having previously worked for the Hawks as Strength and Conditioning Coach from 2005-2011.

Following a brief stint at St Kilda in 2012, Burge has most recently spearheaded Richmond’s high performance since 2013, which included premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Burge boasts a wealth of experience in the sporting industry, following time spent at the Australian Rugby Union, as well as having his own athletic career in track and field.

Head of Football Rob McCartney said the addition of Burge is significant for Hawthorn’s young list.

“Peter has a proven track record of elite high performance, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the club,” McCartney said.

“Given the profile of our young and developing list, we see Peter as the perfect fit to create and implement a high-performance plan to take the group to the next level.”

Burge will lead Hawthorn’s 2023 pre-season program, with current High Performance Manager Luke Boyd to depart following Round 23 this year.

“Luke has been an important part of the club during his time at Hawthorn, which spans more than a decade and includes the premiership years of 2013, 2014 and 2015,” McCartney said.

“He has worked incredibly hard and has always shown a high level of commitment to our players and our program.

“Luke has now indicated a preference to explore his options beyond the walls of Hawthorn.

“We wish Luke all the best in his future endeavours.”
