Hawks Captain Ben McEvoy says he feels fulfilled and privileged following his impressive 15-year career.
The 33-year-old informed his teammates and coaches of his decision to retire at the end of the 2022 season on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media this afternoon, McEvoy paid a heartfelt tribute to all of those who have supported him across his journey, including his current teammates.
“I’ve really had so much fun this year with this group, and it has been such a privileged to captain you guys,” McEvoy said.
“Thank you for that honour and I’m going to miss you all terribly.”
After being selected by St Kilda with Pick 9 in the 2007 national draft, the talented ruckman joined Hawthorn at the end of the 2013 season.
McEvoy says he feels blessed with how his career panned out.
“From my first game at St Kilda, to my first chance to play for Hawthorn – I was unbelievably lucky to play in two premierships in my first two years here,” he said.
“Milestone games are also so special – the weekend just gone (his 250th game) was an absolute fairytale.”
McEvoy said there were several factors that lead to his decision to hang up the boots, including his farm which he will divert his attention to entirely post-football.
“It’s not like my body has completely given out on me, it has always been slow,” McEvoy laughed.
“I think physically, mentally and emotionally the petrol tank is just empty.”
