For Karl Amon, finding a new home in a second club at Hawthorn comes with a sense of familiarity.
After several seasons playing together at Port Adelaide, Amon will be reunited with old teammates Jarman Impey and Chad Wingard for another time in the brown and gold.
Drafted together in 2013, Impey and Amon played four seasons alongside each other at Port between 2014 and 2017 before Impey made the move to Hawthorn ahead of the 2018 season.
“Jars and I have known each other since we were 15 years old,” Amon explained.
“We went through a Flying Boomerangs Indigenous Program together, that’s how we initially met.
“Then we were drafted to Port Adelaide together, found a really good relationship between each other and have since followed each other throughout that whole period.
“So, it’s going to be good to come back and play with him and Chad as well, we played at Port together for a few years before he made the move over to Hawthorn.”
Following a successful junior career at Hampton Rovers and Sandringham Dragons, Amon was selected by Port Adelaide with Pick 68 in the 2013 draft.
Drafted as a small forward/midfielder, Amon spent 2014 playing int he SANFL before making his AFL debut in 2015.
He went on to produce solid seasons in 2019 and 2020, but flourished into one of the competition’s most damaging wingmen in 2021, averaging almost 24 disposals at 73 per cent efficiency.
And while he relished his time in South Australia, Amon is now set to reunite with his family with a return to his home state of Victoria.
“When I first got drafted, I always wanted to play football in Melbourne, so to play for such a big club like Hawthorn is really exciting,” Amon said.
“Being back with family and friends is really exciting too – my sister just had her first little girl and I’m a first –time uncle which is really good to come back to.”
Amon’s stand-out 2021 season led to him being nominated as a member of the All Australian squad of 40, narrowly missing out on the final team.
Another impressive campaign followed in 2022 where he finished as Port’s leading Brownlow vote-getter, with a possible best and fairest accolade well and truly in the picture when the club holds its John Cahill Medal in December.
But with all sights now set on 2023 in the brown and gold, Amon can’t wait to get stuck into business with pre-season officially commencing later this month.
“(On joining Hawthorn) is a little bit surreal, it happened a fair while ago, and I’ve been away for a fair bit overseas,” Amon explained.
“It’s good to now have finally come in, meet a few boys and get shown around the club.
“I obviously know Chad and Jars very well and all the other boys have sent through nice messages so it’s nice now to put names to faces.
“What Sam is bringing to the club is a really exciting brand of football in which I’m really keen to be involved in.”
