With the trade and draft period done and dusted for another year, Hawthorn will enter the 2023 season with several newcomers to its list.

The Hawks currently have 36 senior-listed players and five rookie-listed players, as well as two category B rookies.

It comes after Hawthorn added five fresh faces in Cam Mackenzie, Josh Weddle, Jack O’Sullivan, Henry Hustwaite and Bailey Macdonald following the recent national draft.

Hawthorn Next Generation Academy graduate Josh Bennetts was another to join the club this week after finding his way during the rookie draft.

Port Adelaide star Karl Amon made the switch to the brown and gold following the trade period in addition to youngsters Lloyd Meek (Fremantle) and Cooper Stephens (Geelong).

Box Hill star Fergus Greene also committed to the Hawks on a one-year deal through the delisted player free agency period.  

Jack Gunston, Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara found new homes during the trade period, while Jackson Callow, Connor Downie, Kyle Hartigan, Daniel Howe, Tom Phillips and Jack Saunders were not offered contracts for the 2023 season.

Following a 252-game career, Hawthorn captain and two-time premiership player Ben McEvoy retired at the season’s end. Three-time premiership Hawk Liam Shiels also called time on his sparkling career following 14 seasons in the brown and gold. 

Currently, Hawthorn’s average age heading into the season is 22.1 – dropping significantly from its average of 24.4 last season, which was the fourth youngest in the league.

Meanwhile, jumper numbers for the new year are set to be decided in the coming weeks.

Further additions to the Hawks’ 2023 list can still be made by via the pre-season supplemental selection period and mid-season drafts.
