Visitors to the Hawks Museum in 2023 can view the Don Scott Legends Portrait now on display along with the eight other Club Legends.

Club Legends - 2003 John Kennedy Snr & Leigh Matthews, 2005 Graham Arthur,

2008 Michael Tuck, 2010 Peter Hudson, 2013 David Parkin, 2014 Jason Dunstall,

2017 Peter Knights and 2022 Don Scott.

Since 2003, Hawthorn has been building a collection of portraits of the Club’s Legends.  This collection is unique in the AFL and something for which all associated with Hawthorn should be immensely proud.  2022 saw Don Scott named as the nineth Legend.

Renowned portrait painter, Dave Thomas was commissioned to capture Scott’s image in his 1973 playing attire, the year he was named Best & Fairest.  The portrait depicts Scott standing in front of the Michael Tuck Stand at Glenferrie with his three premiership cups, a group of supporters gathered behind holding Operation Payback signs.

The Club’s captain from 1976 to 1980, Scott was the ultimate competitor – doing what was necessary to win with a relentless mode of attrition.  Scott displayed an additional dimension to his service to the Club when he rallied the faithful in 1996 to prevent a merger proposal with Melbourne.  He then continued his service to the Club as Director on the Board from 2006 to 2004.

Widely regarded as one of the Club’s greatest players, he became a Hawthorn Life Member in 1974, was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2001 and was an Inductee in Hawthorn’s Hall of Fame in 2003.

At Scott’s request, he was elevated to Club Legend status at the Life Members’ Annual Lunch on Sunday, September 18, 2022, with many of his teammates and officials and several opposition players and now good friends from his playing days, such as John Newman, Peter McKenna, and Tony Jewell.

A Hall of Fame Legend is the highest honour that the Club can bestow on an individual for his or her outstanding contribution to the Club.  To gain Legend status the individual must first be an inductee of the HFC Hall of Fame, only HFC Life Members are eligible for induction.  To be named a Legend, the identity must be deemed to have obtained immortal status by his or her outstanding service and contribution to the HFC.  Each Legend has their portrait painted and displayed as a permanent record of their contribution to Hawthorn.

The museum offers thanks to Harvey Hurst for hanging the Don Scott portrait.
