Hawthorn young gun Cam Mackenzie will make his debut in the brown and gold against Essendon this Sunday at the MCG.
Selected by the Hawks with Pick 7 in the 2022 national draft, Mackenzie has been one of the club’s most impressive youngsters this pre-season.
The 19-year-old demanded senior selection in the season opener after an outstanding performance against Collingwood in a practice match a fortnight ago which saw him record 24 disposals, a goal and a game-high 11 scoring involvements.

The 188cm midfielder has slotted in seamlessly among the Hawthorn engine room, showing poise and balance beyond his years, and a strong ball-winning ability.
The Sandringham Dragons junior will be the first Hawk to make his debut in 2023, after the brown and gold blooded a league-leading 16 debutants across the two seasons prior.
General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said Mackenzie’s call-up comes on the back of an impressive first few months at the club.
“We are thrilled to see Cam earn his opportunity to debut for Hawthorn,” McCartney said.
“In only a few short months since being drafted, Cam has demonstrated he’s a fast learner and has an incredible appetite for hard work.
“He is clearly a special youngster and hasn’t looked out of place in our midfield mix, showing flashes of what’s to come right across our practice matches.
“First games are special moments, so we are really excited for Cam that he will make his debut in front of family and friends at the MCG.”
Hawthorn will release its full Round 1 squad tonight at 6.20pm, before the final team to take on Essendon is announced Friday at 5pm.
