Hawthorn has welcomed Mattea Breed and Kristy Stratton to the brown and gold family following a successful night at the AFLW Season Eight supplementary draft.
Breed’s name was first to be called out at Pick 4, with the 21-year-old Darwin product being rewarded for her consistency at SANFLW level.
After spending two seasons with Norwood and then playing a season at local level, the 174cm forward/utility has taken her game to the next level with North Adelaide this year.
In her four games, Breed has averaged 14.3 disposals to go with six goals, displaying her impressive athleticism and goal sense.
As a Darwin Buffaloes junior, Breed made a name for herself by winning two U18 NTFL Best and Fairest awards as well as taking out the competition’s Women’s Rising Star award in 2019.
Box Hill product Stratton was selected by Hawthorn at Pick 18.
The 28-year-old will play for her second AFLW club after featuring in 11 games for Collingwood from 2018-2021.
Ever since then, Stratton has been starring for the brown and gold at VFLW level, averaging 16.2 disposals and 7.1 tackles in 2021 before going on to win Hawthorn’s leading goalkicker award and finishing second in the club’s best and fairest count in 2022.
Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Mitchell Cashion said the draft was a success for the club.
“We’re really pleased with the outcome of our selections at the AFLW Season Eight supplementary draft,” Cashion said.
“Both Mattea and Kristy are not only talented players but fantastic people who live out our brown and gold values, so they will be fantastic additions to our football club.
“With Mattea, we’re getting a powerful forward/utility who continues to elevate her game while with Kristy, we’re getting someone with AFLW experience and knowledge of the way we like to play at the Hawks.
“We look forward to seeing each player continue to develop their game under the tutelage of Bec Goddard and know the Hawthorn community will enjoy what they have to offer in the brown and gold.”
