Hawthorn has signed talented dual-sport athlete Brady Cochrane to its Wheelchair AFL team ahead of the upcoming Victorian Wheelchair Football League (VWFL) season.
The 15-year-old arrives at the Hawks fresh off being crowned as a National Champion with Victoria’s Kevin Coombs Cup basketball team.
Remarkably, he achieved this while playing against established wheelchair athletes who were up to eight years older than him.
Prior to this, Cochrane was invited to Australia’s U23 camp at the AIS and a Basketball Without Borders camp in Geelong.
At that camp, NBA legends including David Robinson, Jerry Stackhouse and Bruce Bowen climbed into wheelchairs to play against Cochrane and his peers.
While Cochrane has ambitions to compete at the Paralympics, he was looking forward to joining the brown and gold this VWFL season, having previously suited up for St Kilda last year.
He joins fellow new addition Hayden Auber as well as returning stars Jo Argaet, Yassin Hill and Finn Broadbent on Hawthorn’s exciting Wheelchair AFL team.
The Hawks begin their quest for success in the VWFL on Sunday 7 May at 2pm, facing off against Richmond at Boroondara Sports Complex.
