Last time we met
Melbourne (91) defeated Hawthorn (81) - Round 7, 2022
After a close tussle up until half time, Melbourne flexed its muscles in the third quarter, kicking six goals to three to put it on a path to its 13.13 (91) to 11.15 (81) victory at the MCG.
Hawthorn made the better start at the MCG kicking two goals inside the first four minutes, and stayed within touching distance of the defending champions for four quarters.
James Sicily (26 disposals), as well as Dylan Moore (33 disposals), who flew home in the second half, were stand-out performers on the day, while Finn Maginness put the clamps on star wingman Ed Langdon, and Blake Hardwick stopped Bayley Fritsch, but it wasn't enough to stop the Demons.
Jacob Koschitzke was another stand-out on the day, booting four goals.
Our last game
After taking control of the game from the outset, Fremantle coasted to dominant 69-point win against Hawthorn last Saturday night at Optus Stadium.
When Mitch Lewis marked in the opening minute of the second quarter and converted his set shot, the margin was seven points and the Hawks were in a position to pounce, given their midfield ascendency.
But a five-goal Freo run quickly followed, despite the Hawks' continued dominance in the midfield, with some poor errors from the visitors' defenders contributing to what turned into a 37-point deficit.
Hawthorn dominated the midfield early but faded badly and conceded 12 of the last 15 goals of the game, with the Dockers turning the screws in a dominant third quarter, putting the game to bed with four unanswered goals.
In his second game back from injury Mitch Lewis finished with two goals, while midfielder Will Day (26 disposals and seven clearances) remains a shining light this season, while James Worpel (25 and six) and Connor Nash (26 and eight) were also influential in the early midfield battles.
