The Hawks won the second quarter and reduced the margin to six points, but couldn't convert a goal.

The scoring opened up for both teams in the third term, as the Hawks and Bombers both scored two goals apiece.

From there, a strong defensive effort helped secure a thrilling one-point win for the Hawks, repeating the efforts of the VWFL team the week prior.

Essendon was held scoreless in the final quarter while Hawthorn sealed the match-winning goal through David Ralph, who scored all three of the team's majors.
