Match Preview: Blue Ribbon Cup clash

Hawthorn will call Marvel home this Sunday when it takes on the Saints for the Blue Ribbon Cup.

Hawthorn will call Marvel home this Sunday when it takes on the Saints for the Blue Ribbon Cup.

The Blue Ribbon Cup is one of the AFL’s longest standing traditions and honours the courage and sacrifice of all Victorian police officers and those that have fallen in the line of duty.

Players, coaches and on-field staff from both the Hawks and the Saints will wear blue and white checked armbands as a show of respect.

The match was first established in 2000 as a tribute to Victoria police members, Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rodney Miller who were killed in the line of duty in Moorabbin on 16 August 1998.

After a heartbreaking one-point loss last week against Richmond, Hawthorn will be eager to make amends against the Saints.

Meanwhile, St Kilda will be hoping to keep its spot in the top eight as it looks to enter finals.

The last time these two teams met saw the Hawks soar to a thrilling 10-point win, with captain James Sicily starring on the day with a monster 42-disposal performance.

Last time we met

Hawthorn (88) defeated St Kilda (78), Round 11, 2023

Hawthorn snatched a thrilling upset victory over St Kilda after kicking the last five goals of the match when they met earlier this year.

James Sicily produced a true captain's performance to drag the Hawks over the line to win by 10 points at Marvel Stadium.

The 28-year-old amassed 42 disposals – nine more than his previous best – to go with 21 intercept possessions, 17 contested possessions, 11 score involvements and 628m gained in one of the most dominant displays produced by a defender in 2023.

The game looked over when Dan Butler put St Kilda 20 points up when he kicked the first goal of the final quarter, but the Hawks kicked the next five goals to leave the Saints in their wake.

With less than three minutes left on the clock, Jacob Koschitzke marked and converted to give Sam Mitchell’s side the lead for the first time since the second quarter, before Luke Breust slotted his third of the day in the final minute to quash any hope the Saints had of their own comeback.

Jai Newcombe (31 disposals and nine clearances), Will Day (30 disposals and 597 metres gained), Conor Nash (27 disposals and five tackles), Dylan Moore (31 disposals and nine marks) and James Worpel (24 disposals and six clearances) got the job done, while Mitch Lewis snagged a team-high three goals.

Our last game

Richmond (96) defeated Hawthorn (95), Round 19

Last Saturday saw heartbreak for the Hawks after Richmond pulled off a comeback one-point win at the MCG.

The Tigers managed to string together a six-goal turnaround to overhaul a desperate Hawthorn outfit, taking their first lead of the day with a minute remaining.

The Hawks played a ferocious brand of footy for the first three quarters, finding plenty of space early through the middle of the ground, threatening with plenty of run off half-back.

Chad Wingard recorded 10 disposals in the first quarter and finished with 17 and three goals for the game in a vintage performance across half-forward.

Mitch Lewis booted four goals in an engaging battle with Noah Balta, who took 14 marks and kept the Tigers alive as the Hawks piled on the pressure.

James Sicily set the tone from the opening bounce, his long sleeves soaring above the pack in defensive 50 time and time again, building a wall that the Tigers could not break.

He was particularly crucial in a few late contests with Jack Riewoldt as the Tigers charged home, but ultimately to no avail.
