Season summary:
Mackenzie burst out of the blocks in his first season at the top level, making his debut in Round 1, before going on to play 14 games. Despite being named as the sub on four occasions, the 19-year-old was trusted with the responsibility of running through the midfield, showing just why Hawthorn snapped him up with 7th Pick in the 2022 national draft. Given his elite skills and well-rounded game, Mackenzie will look to build a strong fitness base in the upcoming pre-season as he looks to cement his spot in the Hawthorn side.
Best AFL game:
Mackenzie showed plenty of poise, polish and toughness in Hawthorn Round 3 win over North Melbourne, which was his best outing in his debut season. The 19-year-old gave fans a glimpse of his potential, with 20 possessions, nine tackles, five score involvements, four inside 50s and two clearances.
How the coaches saw him:
“In his first year in the system, Cam played 14 games. It is really good to have gotten games into those high draft picks early so they can understand what is required. With another good summer, Cam will take a lot out of the intensity, fitness and repeat effort things that good AFL midfielders possess. He’s another one that should be looking forward to a really good pre-season to show that he can build that base. His skillset with his decision-making and ball in hand is really strong.” - David Hale
