Hawthorn will face the Giants for the second time this season this Sunday in Round 21, this time in Manuka Oval.

This weekend’s clash also marks the second time the Hawks have played in Canberra, the first back in 2019, the only AFL match played through snowfall.

The hosts sit fifth on the league ladder, while the Hawks are ninth, outside the top 8 by percentage.

The previous match up between the two teams earlier this season was decided by a single goal, so it’s bound to be an exciting clash.

 Last time we met

Hawthorn (85) defeated GWS Giants (79) in Round 13, 2024.

With the game on the line Hawthorn broke a 79-79 deadlock courtesy of a Luke Breust goal from a down field free kick with a minute to play.

The lead changed numerous times throughout the dramatic fourth quarter, after Hawthorn held a narrow three-point lead at the final break.

Mabior Chol was one of the Hawks best and provided the highlight of the first quarter when he converted a high-flying pack mark into a goal.

Hawthorn rallied with a six-goal-to-two third quarter, including two for the term from veteran, Jack Gunston – finishing with three for the afternoon.

Will Day was best on ground for the Hawks with a team-high 26 disposals and equal game-high 10 tackles.

Our last game

Hawthorn (124) defeated Adelaide Crows (58), Round 20, 2024.

Hawthorn secured a 66-point win over the Crows in Adelaide last Sunday afternoon.

From early in the second term, the Hawks managed 13 unanswered goals to record their win, keeping the home side goalless for almost all of the second half before they kicked two late in the fourth term.

Will Day was prolific, excelling from the opening whistle (20 disposals, seven tackles and one goal), alongside the superb Connor Macdonald (28 disposals and two goals).

Jarman Impey and Karl Amon delivered plenty of drive and quality foot skills off half-back, while Jai Newcombe provided grunt.

Skipper James Sicily celebrated his 150th game with two goals, while Mabior Chol (two goals, seven marks) grew better as the match went on, the pair among 11 individual goal kickers for Hawthorn.
