Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge has further detailed the decision behind ruling gun midfielder Will Day out of Friday's Elimination Final against the Western Bulldogs.

After suffering a collarbone injury in Hawthorn's Round 23 win over Richmond, Burge also provided an update on how Day's recovery is going more generally, with the 23-year-old continuing to make progress.

Will Day - SC Joint (TBC)

"Wil had started some running about a week ago and was progressing through a conditioning program. So that's one part of his preparation, getting him running and getting him conditioning and ticking those boxes, but then there's also the SC Joint injury itself and the ability to progress that. There are a number of things that we had to look at and with the information we were given last week, it just wasn't in a position where we could progress to contact training, so we made the call that he wouldn't be playing this weekend. Our doctor Liam West made the statement last week that he's progressing but just hasn't been able to get to the level that's allowed us to resume any contact training. So while there's progression that we've seen over the last two weeks, it's just not in a position where we can take that next step. Given the nature of the injury, we're always weighing up risk and reward with that but for this week, he's not available and we'll look to make some progression next week."
