Hawthorn utility Finn Maginness says inking a contract extension with the club was an “easy” decision.

Now approaching his sixth season in brown and gold, Maginness was already contracted until the end of 2025 but will now extend his stay until at least until at least the end of 2027.

With brown and gold running through his veins, the 23-year-old said the people around him had a big impact on his decision to remain a Hawk for at least another two years.

“I love the Hawthorn footy club, I love the people here, the players and coaches, It's a great place to be,” said Maginness.

“We’re trending in the right direction and it’s really exciting so for me it was a really easy decision to stick to the Hawks.”

Not only does Maginness have his coaches and teammates backing him in, but his family are also his biggest supporters.

Of course, this includes his dad Scott, who played 131 games for the Hawks between 1988 - 1996, grandpa Norm, who suited up for the brown and gold on 64 occasions between 1953 and 1958 and brother Ned, who made his VFL debut for Box Hill earlier this year.

“There’s obviously a lot of rich family history around here with my dad and grandpa playing here,” the third-generation Hawk said.

“My family’s always been Hawthorn.

“I’ve got a big Hawthorn family, lots of cousins, uncles, aunties, they all love the club.

“The Hawthorn footy club has played a big part in my family’s life so I’m very grateful to be here and I’ve loved my journey so far, the last five years.

“I’ve got an extra year and now an extra two more so I’m stoked.”

In 2024, Maginness was able to combine his 10 VFL appearances with 13 AFL games, including being one of many young Hawks to taste finals for the first time in brown and gold.

When reflecting on his form throughout the year, Maginness believed he played at a consistent level in both the VFL and the AFL.

“I thought I played to a high standard at both levels,” he said.

“To finish with playing a couple of finals, I thought I performed pretty decently so it was good to finish the season in the side with a couple of finals.

“Winning against the Doggies was obviously a massive highlight for the football club.

“More importantly, as a group, we’re pretty exciting and playing a brand of footy that the supporters would love to see and come and watch.

“It’s really exciting for us playing and I hope it’s exciting for the fans as well.”

Along with his contract extension, Maginness believes there are plenty of reasons for Hawks fans to be excited about the future of the club.

“We’ve got a couple of new recruits that have come in, Tom Barrass and Josh Battle, so to have them help bolster our list, I think we’re in a really good,” Maginness said.

“Just having the group of boys as well, another year older, an extra 25 games in our legs compared to the start of last year, it’s really exciting to see what the group can do this year.”
