Hawthorn has welcomed a new batch of players after the 2024 AFLW Draft.
The five new Hawks and their families spent the day in at the club back in December, and in the midst of the day they sat down to detail their emotions fresh from being drafted.
Draft night can come with a lot of overwhelming emotions, which Lavinia Cox, Elli Symonds and Rebecca Clottey described as being exactly the case for them.
Lavinia Cox
“It was unreal. When the pick came up and it was Hawthorn, I was literally praying it was going to be me and then heard the start of my name so just started screaming and everyone got around me. All my family was crying, I was crying, it was the best feeling ever,” Cox said.
Elli Symonds
“Draft night was probably one of the most nerve-wracking things of my life. Hearing my name I straight away burst into tears, as the picks kept coming and I couldn’t see my name at all so when I saw it, I literally had my head in my hands, and I was so over the moon with excitement. Probably one of the most special nights of my life,” said Symonds.
Rebecca Clottey
“I couldn’t believe it when they called my name. I was in disbelief, I asked my little sister ‘Is that my name on the screen?’ and I was like ‘Oh my god’ I started to have little tears in my eyes, but it was tears of happiness and joy,” Clottey said.
Grace Baba
Grace Baba said she’s most looking forward to playing alongside the Hawks Captain, whom she’s idolised in recent years and said it was “unreal” to meet her.
“I’d probably say Em Bates. She’s such a hard worker and I’d just love to learn a lot from her and hopefully pick up her hard work,” she said.
Daisy Flockart
While for Daisy Flockart it’s a friend that she hopes to line up with for the very first time.
“I’d probably say Bridie Hipwell, just cause we’re good friends, went to school together, she was two years above, played at Drags (Sandringham Dragons) together, we never got to actually play a game together cause one or the other we were always injured but now I hope to get to play with her someday,” Flockart said.
Each player was asked to describe their playing style in one word, here’s what they had to say:
Cox – “Quick”
Symonds – “Competitive”
Clottey – “Tackling”
Baba – “Fun”
Flockart – “Aggression”
