Box Hill went 2-0 after a nine-point win over North Melbourne in a Saturday afternoon clash at Box Hill City Oval.

VFL Senior Coach Zane Littlejohn said it was another great result.

“The most pleasing thing from a coach's perspective was the players' mentality to continue to just find a way when the game wasn't looking exactly how he wanted it to and to wrestle the momentum back,” he said.

“We have two weeks off now. We’ll have a little scratch match with Essendon on the Gather Round weekend just to keep our boys going and get some footy under their belt.”

Littlejohn reviewed all 12 AFL-listed Hawks' performances from the match and gave a few VFL player shoutouts.

Henry Hustwaite (38 disposals, 25 contested possessions, 12 clearances)

“So probably a PB (personal best) game for Henry at our level. He found the footy, his clearance work again, as we know, his clearance work is one of his real weapons, and he was able to really showcase that. But I think the pleasing thing is, from his 38 disposals, 25 contested, 14 uncontested, and five of those result in a score, nine inside 50s, and he's had six tackles himself. So you look at the stat line, it's the balance of that stat line for us that we were really pleased with. He's becoming a real leader at our level now and starting to showcase that he can play above VFL level consistently now, which is really pleasing. So a great return for Henry, as I mentioned, his stoppage clearance work was a highlight.”

Jai Serong (23 disposals, five intercept possessions, four tackles)

“A real step forward again for Jai and he has done it for 12 months now, consistently played above the VFL level. And I think on the weekend, he was able to do that as a real general for us down there, even with Frosty amongst the group, he’s a real general still. Had some really good contest wins, was able to start a lot of our Hawks-ball for us as well and again, just a really consistent performance from Jai. He’s become arguably one of the most consistent players at VFL level. Now he's just able to turn up regularly for us and get his job done.”

Ned Reeves (Two goals, 34 hit-outs, 18 disposals)

“Since I've been coaching, I think by far Ned's best game I've seen him play at our level. He's played some good AFL games, but he really controlled the big-man department on the weekend. When your ruckman is doing that, and he's the dominant big man on the ground, I think that's super important. He’s had 18 and he's gone forward and kicked two goals, really important goals, he had seven clearances himself and three contested marks. You know, that's a great game from a big guy, just did it all for us, which is really pleasing, great return from Ned.”

Bodie Ryan (17 disposals, four marks)

“This is a young man who I'm really pleased with how he responded, he started the game a little bit slowly. I think just finding the pace of the game again after having sort of a week out was really pleasing as the game went on. So he struggled early but what I was really pleased with was when he was getting beaten, he put his hand up to say that he was getting beaten in the game early, but I thought his second half, he started to find a bit more of the Bodie that we know. He defended really hard, was hard to play against and he got some reward with that, which is really pleasing.”

Noah Mraz (13 disposals, three intercept possessions)

“Tough bugger, geez he was tough on the day. Unfortunately, got a little gash on his head, came off, would have looked nasty for the people there, but he was able to get back on the ground and really compete. He took a really crucial mark late in the game. He's going to be a player, he's just got to continue to be really consistent with all these contests now, not sort of win one or half one and then lose the next two and then win the next one. We want a real mentality of hard to play against with our backs, and he's able to do that at times but with any young draftee, it's just about consistency with them in that area.”

Cody Anderson (13 disposals, three tackles)

“So played across half forward again, what we love about Cody is just his willingness to turn up and pressure consistently. What I think was the highlight of Cody's game this week was his ability to show speed and power on the outside. He really broke the lines and was really powerful with ball in hand, so a really nice return again from Cody. He's starting to really adapt well to his forward craft and all we've asked for Cody is to find ways to put pressure on the game, and when he's able to do that, we're a better footy team for it.”

Max Ramsden ( Two goals, 12 disposals, four score involvements)

“Rama was really solid, we’ve got high expectations for him at our level and where he can go. But he was able to have an influence on the game again, kick his two goals, six score involvements, his ability in the ruck, to help us out in the second ruck department and give us great use in that area of the ground as well, he had two clearances himself. What we love about Rama is his ability to cover the ground as a big he's a tough matchup for any defender, especially because he can run and go at you in the air, which is really pleasing.”

Sam Frost (11 disposals, five intercept possessions, three contested marks)

“I think we were so lucky to have Sam Frost play for our football club on the weekend. His leadership, his buy-in to our program, his endeavour and his want to win were on show. We swung him forward late in the game, and although he didn't kick the goals, they were both Jaspers Scaife’s two goals in the last quarter, Frosty was in both of those contests. And I guess you've got to see the tape to realise his increases in his bodywork to protect Scaifey, to be able to take the marks, was really smart. So what a great player, great leader, great person to have as a coach, I guess. Then late in the game, went back behind the ball to shore us up and sort of help us ice the game. A huge contest late in the game, which was massive and, yeah great leader and experienced player to have in our footy team. We loved what he was able to bring both off the field, he's buy-in to the group, and obviously on the field. It's just great to see him back out there playing and being tough and physical like we know Frosty can be.”

Matt Hill (Nine disposals, three intercept possessions)

“Hilly spent a bit of time at both ends of the ground this week. We just wanted to use his speed in the front end and as we know, Hilly, his ability to tackle from his background, was probably a bit unlucky not to get rewarded with a few of his tackles. But his pressure and his energy are elite and we really love what he's able to bring in that space. So he'll continue to learn his craft and as we know, all our draftees, as I mentioned, it’s just about consistency with these guys. And he'll be showing great consistency with the pressure side of his game. It's now just supporting him in developing all other aspects of his game.”

Will McCabe (One goal, eight disposals, three intercept possessions)

“Was pleasing to see him hit the scoreboard this week, starting to get a bit more of the ball on the outside. Will is a really athletic, I guess key forward or key defender, wherever we sort of see him best fit, but he spent the majority of the day forward. What I really loved with Will was his ability to work hard, and sometimes with a player like Will, his work rate is going to create for others, not necessarily for himself, and that's what we're seeing at the moment. So he'll get his lick of the ice cream, he's just got to keep buying into that side of the game and working really hard, so when it does become his turn, he's going to continue to be in the right spot. Spent some time down back as well, which we know he can do, and that's the versatility he's able to give us is awesome.”

Jasper Scaife (Three goals, eight disposals)

“Another mentality game for Scaifey, probably didn't have the best first three quarters he would have liked. His contest was a bit off, but his last quarter, when we really needed him to stand up was super strong. He kicked the two goals, provided a contest down the line, even late, we needed a big contested mark down the line, and he was able to take it and he kicked truly. We know he's a beautiful kick at the footy, so when he got his opportunities, he made the most of them, which was really pleasing. But as I mentioned, it was late in the game, which I was really impressed with Jasper, his mentality to stay in the game for long periods of the game was awesome.”

Bailey Macdonald (Seven disposals, three tackles)

“Baz is a funny one, I thought he had way more influence on the game than the stat line says. His ability to defend hard this week was awesome. They brought a lot of forwards up to the stoppage and Baz was quite often caught high in that role, which suits him really well. But he defended really positively in that space. Only the seven disposals, but we saw some of his dash and run and create off half-back, which is what we love with Baz. So yeah, although the stat line doesn't read high for Baz, he had more of an influence on the game than that says, so that's a pleasing sign.”

… and some VFL player shoutouts

Callum Porter (One goal, 20 disposals, eight inside 50s)

“I'm going to give a shoutout this week to our Captain. I thought Cal Porter, he’s a 'Mr. Fix It', can play a variety of roles for us, but his work this week in front of the ball and his contest work was sensational. He's learning his craft, he's had eight inside 50s, kicked one goal two, and he drew two 50-metre penalties late in the game for us, which was so vital, and assured that they were goals. We worked really closely with the leaders last week and with close finishes and just how to be adaptive through games when the score is not looking how we want it to look. So a shoutout to our captain, Cal Porter, we're very lucky to have him.”

Ethan Stanley (Two goals, 18 disposals, seven clearances)

“Great to have 'Milky' back at our footy club. He kicked two goals off a wing, he’s done a great job, but also spent time inside, and we're starting to see some real growth in his inside game. He's had seven clearances himself, which is awesome. He’s working really hard on that and the pleasing thing is, six first possessions into seven clearances is a great return, then hits the scoreboard himself. We saw a lot of running and his dash, which we would all remember before he got drafted to Fremantle, so he's starting to find a bit of himself again, which we're loving. His toughness is really starting to come through again as well, which is really pleasing.”

Kye Declase (Two goals, 13 disposals, three inside 50s)

“And just another shout out to Kye Declase, who obviously played his 100th VFL game this week, and kicked his 100th goal at VFL level as well.”
