When Finn Maginness runs out for his 50th AFL game on Sunday night, it will be a special milestone for his entire family.

The Maginness family are Hawthorn through and through, with Finn's grandfather Norm playing 64 games for the club between 1953 and 1958 and father Scott playing 131 matches between 1988 and 1996.

Now, Finn's milestone will give his family the significant record of having three consecutive generations reach the 50-game mark at Hawthorn.

Of course, the famous Kennedy family have achieved a similar milestone, however the Maginness family will become the first to play 50+ matches across the three generations in the brown and gold.

Adding to the significance of the milestone will be the fact that Finn will run out in his dad's iconic number 20, following his switch from the number 32 at the start of this year.

It was in 2019 when Finn's dream was first realised, being taken as a father-son draft pick after plying his trade across East Brighton, Scotch College and the Sandringham Dragons.

The 24-year-old had to wait until Round 17 in 2020 to make his debut before playing a further two games in 2021.

Across the past three years, Maginness has found more consistency in his game, suiting up for more than 10 AFL games in each of those past three seasons.

His versatility has also been on show, from tagging some of the AFL's most dangerous midfielders on the MCG to kicking goals on the Gold Coast.

Whether it's at AFL or VFL level, Maginness has always proven to be a reliable teammate.

After a long stint for Box Hill last year, the talented Hawk earned his call-up during the club's 2024 finals campaign and hasn't come out of the side since, highlighting his improvement at the highest level.

Having signed a contract extension until at least the end of 2027, Maginness will now have an on-field milestone to match, just like his dad and grandad.

"The family legacy is incredibly important," Maginness told RSN Breakfast.

"It's something my family's really proud of, I've got a big Hawthorn family. My Uncle Glen also played in the Under 19s.

"It's something special that I hold close to my heart, my bond with my grandpa and my dad as well being three generations, it means a lot to me and the family."

Hawthorn Coach Sam Mitchell also recognised Maginness' special milestone.

“I had a chat with him this morning," Mitchell told media on Friday morning.

"So there’s 50 games and you can play 50 like Connor Macdonald where you get drafted and you play 50 before anyone’s blinked and then there’s 50 like Finn Maginness where it’s one of those really impressive stories about resilience and persistence and optimism.

"Just the way he’s gone about his footy and his whole attitude, I mean the way he’s changed his game over a long period of time and really refined his craft and has now become probably one of the most flexible players in the competition so I’m really proud of him and really proud that he’s able to play 50 games which is actually the third generation of 50-gamers which is the first time our club’s ever had that so it’s a really impressive story and I’m rapt for him to bring up game 50.”
