Hawthorn is proud to support the Dare to Hope match for a fourth consecutive year when the Hawks take on Geelong at the MCG on Easter Monday.
Dare to Hope is the legacy of the late Paul Dear, who passed away from Pancreatic Cancer in July 2022 after being diagnosed in September 2020.
Dear is a Hawthorn Premiership Player and the 1991 Norm Smith Medallist, who played 123 games in the brown and gold. His football legacy at Hawthorn is continued today by his son, Calsher Dear.
The Dare to Hope match aims to increase awareness of pancreatic cancer and its impact, as well as raise funds towards critical medical research to improve outcomes.
Pancreatic cancer kills around 4,000 Australians each year, with only one in ten people surviving longer than five years, essentially a gun to your gut.
With no early detection test available, Dare to Hope is raising money to Jump The Gun Against Pancreatic Cancer. This year’s Dare to Hope match will feature The Gut Run, a fundraising activation ahead of the first bounce from 2.50 pm and will be broadcast live on Channel 7.
Former sporting greats and celebrity guests will make up a relay team that will attempt to break the 400-metre world record of 43.03 seconds. They include:
- Isaac Smith (Former Hawthorn and Geelong player)
- Jordan Lewis (Former Hawthorn and Melbourne player)
- Billy Brownless (Former Geelong player)
- Zach Tuohy (Former Geelong player)
- Dave Hughes (Comedian)
- Maya Dear (Daughter of Paul Dear)
- Abbey Caldwell (Australian 800m Champion / Commonwealth Games Medallist)
The run will take place around the MCG, with each donation allowing the team to ‘jump the gun’ and move their starting point closer to the finish line.
