Hawthorn has kicked its season off in some promising form, winning two of its opening three games.
With the likes of reigning Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell sidelined through this period, a range of Hawks have had to stand up in the absence of some of their teammates.
We’ve taken a look at some of those players and how their early season form ranks league-wide.
James Sicily (1st in the competition for rebound 50s)
Now an integral part of the Hawthorn backline, James Sicily has continued to prove himself as one of the game’s leading rebounding defenders. With 33 rebound 50s to his name already after the first three rounds, Sicily leads the rest of the league in this statistic with his penetrating right foot one of the Hawks greatest weapons out of the back half.
Ben McEvoy (2nd for contested marks)
Not many players enjoy the best season of their career in their 12th campaign, but one could easily mount a case for Ben McEvoy currently being amidst his best year. The 29-year-old has already booted four goals this season, while he is also pulling down contested marks at an alarming rate of four per game.
Jack Gunston (4th for marks inside 50)
In his maiden All Australian year in 2018, Jack Gunston ranked 16th for marks inside 50, recording 1.8 per game. Gunston has begun this season at an even greater level in this area, sitting fourth in the league for the statistic.
Jaeger O’Meara (4th for tackles, 6th for kicks)
Jaeger O’Meara is another who is without doubt having his best season to date. Leading the Hawks midfield, O’Meara has proven one of the premier two-way midfielders in the competition. That assertion couldn’t be better exemplified than his standing with the fourth-most tackles and the sixth-most kicks so far in 2019.
Conor Nash (3rd for goal assists)
Conor Nash may be averaging just under 10 disposals per game through the opening three outings of the year, but the Irishman’s influence has been worth its weight in gold. Through a number of quick, releasing handballs and finding himself in good attacking positions, Nash has proven impactful in generating scoring opportunities for the Hawks.
