A win is a win.
But you get the sense from Ben McEvoy that Hawthorn’s victory over Collingwood on Friday night meant a little bit more than normal.
“It was one of those spirit-lifting wins,” McEvoy said in a press conference on Tuesday.
“It wasn’t a pretty game of footy, but we fought really hard.
“It was really pleasing, after a pretty tough month, to get the win.”
Playing in his 200th game, the Hawks ruckman was one of his side’s best as it recorded its sixth win of the year.
After a close loss to West Coast the previous week, McEvoy said the team had taken confidence out of matching it with last year’s grand finalists in the past two games.
“The last fortnight has been really reassuring for us that we’re not that far off.
“But, at the end of the day, you look at the win-loss and you can’t deny where we’re at.
“But there have certainly been some good signs lately.”
