Hawthorn defender Grant Birchall is facing a race against the clock to make another appearance in 2019.

Birchall injured his hamstring in the third quarter of the Hawks' clash with North Melbourne on Friday night.

Darren Minchington is also battling to keep his season alive, with the forward estimated to miss at least another three weeks.

Ryan Schoenmakers is closing in on his return from a calf injury with the premiership Hawk hopeful of playing within the next fortnight.
