SCANS have confirmed Hawthorn midfielder Alex Woodward will miss the remainder of 2015.
Woodward tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee early in Box Hill Hawks’ 100-point win against Coburg in the VFL on Sunday.
It is the third time he has torn the ACL in his right knee.
GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan said it was devastating news for the 22-year-old and the Hawks.
“He’s worked so hard over the last two or three years to come back from his previous knee reconstructions and to have it happen for a third time is a big blow,” Fagan said.
“It was difficult to know what to say to him when it happened.
“It’s just disappointing. He’s such a resilient, popular team member and he’s been playing really well and pushing for a spot in the senior team.
“To have that happen doesn’t seem fair.”
The 2014 JJ Liston Trophy winner has again starred for Box Hill Hawks this year and was on the fringe of senior selection before the injury.
“His teammates have rallied around him,” Fagan said.
“I know he caught up with (former Hawk) Max Bailey, who’s a great friend of his, and Max has been through the same situation himself.
“There’s good support around him, I think he goes to see the surgeon tomorrow to see what the plans are and we’ll just take it from there.”
