JACK Gunston remains in doubt for Hawthorn's preliminary final against Fremantle at Domain Stadium next Friday night, with the Hawks not expecting to know until early next week whether the spearhead will be available.
Gunston injured his ankle midway through the final quarter of the Hawks' qualifying final loss to West Coast last Friday night, when he fell awkwardly as he contested a ground ball with Eagles captain Shannon Hurn.
Gunston sat out the Hawks' 74-point thumping of Adelaide in Friday night's second semi-final at the MCG, but is confident of taking on Freo.
Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson told reporters after the game that Gunston had made "reasonable" progress in the week since his injury, but still had work to do to prove his fitness.
"He was not good enough (to play) tonight, so we'll have to wait and see early in the week," Clarkson said.
"We're uncertain. He's up and about and walking about any aid of crutches or moonboots or anything like that, so hopefully he'll be OK to play. But we'll have to wait and see how he progresses over the next two or three days.
"We always thought straight away it was going to be severe enough [for him] to miss a week or two of footy, but we've been really pleased with the progress he's made.
"We'll see how he goes over the next three or four days."
Earlier on Friday night, Gunston told Triple M radio that he expected he would have to prove his fitness by Tuesday or Wednesday next week to take on Fremantle.
The forward was confident he would be able to do so.
"I wouldn't say (I'm) a certainty, but I'm confident," Gunston said.
