Hawthorn Football Club and the AFL can confirm that an image of Taylor Duryea and what looks like an illicit substance was fully investigated and found to be an ill-advised practical joke.
The investigation was undertaken by the AFL Integrity Unit and concluded in November 2014.
As soon as the club was made aware of the image they notified the AFL, and Duryea immediately submitted himself to a drug test.
Duryea’s initial drug test and subsequent hair test were both clear.
Despite investigators being satisfied no illicit substance was involved, Duryea was subject to target testing following the incident.
He also undertook counselling and was given further education around the use of social media.
Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox said:
“Drug use is not a joke and the prank was thoughtless and incredibly disappointing.
“Hawthorn takes this matter very seriously and Taylor was sanctioned under the Personal Conduct Policy.
“Taylor was extremely apologetic for his actions and used this as an opportunity to educate his teammates on the seriousness of the issue and the pitfalls of social media.
“Whilst the matter has been concluded, the club acknowledges that Illicit drug use is a serious community-wide issue and will continue to be vigilant and proactive in educating its players about the significant risks involved.”
The AFL is satisfied with the actions taken by Hawthorn and has worked hand in hand with the club on resolving this issue.
